But there are so many other places to explore in this country. The culture and people of Mexico City makes an ideal spot for adding this to your vacation plans for 2019. Be sure to put these four attractions on your itinerary.

Palace of Fine Arts:

Often considered the cultural center of Mexico City, the exterior looks art deco, and the interior has marble floors and arched glass windows. The building plays host to several events each year, including theater, opera, and dance performances. There are several murals within, including those of Rufino Tamayo. The National Museum of Architecture takes up the top floor Admission is free on Sundays and very affordable the rest of the week.

This building, known as the Plaza de la Constitucion, is in the main public square and very recognizable. The giant Mexican flag at the center has been there since the Aztecs. There are widely attended religious events held here during Holy Week, and several other historical buildings border the square.

TotesNewsworthy recommends beginning your visit to Zocalo at sunset, to watch the soldiers take down the flag. While there you can also visit the nearby national cathedral and the National Palace.

National Cathedral:

We also highly recommend spending some time in this ornate and impressive Cathedral while visiting Mexico City. Built between 1573 and 1813 after the Spanish conquered Tenochtitlan, this is a top attraction for the area. There are five naves, 14 chapels, underground catacombs, and magnificent art. It may remind US-Americans of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The cathedral is open daily and has free admission, and is worth a quick trip, even if only for photos.

National Palace:

Home to the executive branch of the Mexican government, the palace also sits among the cathedral in the main public square. The palace is closed on Mondays, but admission is free all of the other days. Passport or other identification is required for admittance. The palace has several gardens, murals, and fountains outside its massive building. The murals depict the various parts of Mexican history, from the pre-Columbian days through today. One of the most famous murals were painted by Diego Rivera.

TotesNewsworthy encourages vacationers to put Mexico City on their lists of vacation destinations this year. It also has the best food with its local favorite Tacos El Pastor. Mexico City is a Mecca for foodies; this is where you can find some of the best restaurants in the world.
