Many health and diet experts recommend taking a closer look the next time you’re shopping, and really think about all of the ingredients in many of the foods enjoyed by you and your family. And be prepared to be surprised when you realize many common food additives that are dangerous to your health are hiding in popular items.

Common food additives that are dangerous to your health are often found in highly processed foods. Some of these ingredients are hazardous additives and chemicals that can cause illness and diseases, leading to early deaths.

The majority of “real foods” such as eggs, meats, vegetables, and seafood are primarily unaltered and are held to stricter regulations by the Food and Drug Administration, also known as the FDA. Buying and consuming food products in their most natural and whole state is generally the best for a healthy diet.

However, processed foods are an entirely different story, as each can be a chemical cocktail of multiple artificial ingredients and substances. Since the 1950s, the number of food additives allowed in American food has gone from about 800 to over 10,000. So, the food’s that you might have eaten as a kid aren’t the same as what’s on grocery shelves today, and many contain what have now become common food additives that are dangerous to your health.

Now that you know why processed foods can be dangerous let’s look more specifically at common food additives that are dangerous to your health. Next time you go food shopping, take the time to locate and take a good look at the ingredients labels so that you’ll know what to avoid.

The most prevalent additive is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a sweetener commonly used in soft drinks and other sugary products. Fructose gets moved to your liver, the only organ that can transport it, and you intake a lot of it in a typical Western diet.

Several studies have shown that high fructose corn syrup can have the same effects on your liver as alcohol. The more HFCS a food contains, the worse it is for your overall health and well-being.  It’s best to keep your total fructose level to about 25 grams per day, which can be very difficult, as a 12 oz can of soda has this much by itself.

Next are artificial sweeteners, such as Aspartame. Many health experts believe these artificial sweeteners are significant players in the rise of American obesity. Sweet-tasting neurotoxins like those found in products such as Splenda are being found in more and more products every year. While sugar can be bad for your body, it’s become clear that artificial sweeteners are just as bad, if not worse.

Other common food additives that are dangerous to your health include Monosodium Glutamate or MSG. MSG was most commonly associated with Chinese food a few years ago, but it is also found in numerous processed foods. Everything from frozen dinners to salad dressings can contain MSG these days.

Common food additives that are dangerous to your health include MSG because it is an excitotoxin, which gives it the ability to overexcite your cells, eventually leading to diseases. Excitotoxins are believed to lead to severe illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease.

So what’s the best way to combat common food additives that are dangerous to your health? First, take a closer look at the food labels when shopping. Look for these items, and choose another food if the chemicals are there.

Look at organic grocery stores, as they will have fewer chemicals and better food for your body. If you want to avoid common food additives that are dangerous to your health, grow your food, and enjoy a fresh tomato or apple! If you stay attentive and realize what you put in your body, it will be better for you in the long run and improve your health.
