The Importance of Good Posture in the Workplace

Your health should always be a huge priority, but it’s difficult to improve when you sit down in an office for eight hours a day. The good news is workplaces across the country are working to better the health of their employees. Many people are guilty of having bad health habits at work, including slouching. To improve your health and wellness, here is the importance of good posture in the workplace and how you can improve it.

Why You Want to Improve Your Posture

Avoid Fatigue

Do you ever feel pain in your neck or back while you are at work? Well, this is a common result of having bad posture. You are likely sitting down in a way where you are using more of your weak muscles instead of your stronger ones towards the front. Poor posture is also bad on your joints, bones, and ligaments. Avoid any bodily fatigue, like back pain or neck strain, by fixing your posture.

Cause Poor Digestion and Heart Brun

A health risk you can suffer from when sitting improperly is poor digestion and even heartburn. This is due us slouching, which puts pressure on our abdomen. This then causes stomach acid to go in the wrong direction. Changing how you sit can prevent this. Some other health issues that can be caused by poor posture include constipation and incontinence.

Look Professional

When you are slouched over, it can also give off the wrong impression when you are at work. By having a better posture, you can present to your fellow employees and employers that you’re more professional.

Improve Your Mood

A surprising benefit of adopting a good posture is that it can actually improve your mood. In addition to sending the body language that you are more professional, proper posture can also boost your self-esteem and improve your alertness level.

Ways to Improve Posture

Sit up Straight

So, what is proper posture then? Well, proper posture is sitting up straight, having both feet on the ground, having your elbows in an “L” shape, having your back against the chair, and relaxing your shoulders. In addition to how you sit, you should have your eyes at a 20-degree angle when you’re working on a computer.

Use a Standing Desk

It’s important that you adjust your work chair so you can sit properly. Additionally, you will want to use a standing desk as well, because sitting all day can cause various health issues—such as increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. A standing desk will also force you to sit up straight. When you use a standing desk, this doesn’t mean that you should never sit down. Instead, use the standing desk properly by standing 15 minutes each hour and consider checking out tips for using a standing desk.

Stretch

There are also various stretches you can do throughout the workday that can help you reduce the pain you may feel. Some great stretches that you can do right at your desk include:

  • Seated knee lifts
  • Overhead stretch
  • Spinal twist
  • Forward bend
  • Shoulder shrugs

By understanding the importance of good posture, you can become healthier in the place where you spend the majority of your time each week.
