Why are people choosing to seek help from AI?
There are plenty of reasons to seek help from AI instead of an actual person. First, the app you use to make the diagnosis is likely cheaper than using a real doctor. Both in medical costs and travel expenses. Secondly, it is so much more convenient. When you are sick, you don’t want to be driving to visit the doctor when you can use an app from the comfort of your bed to make a diagnosis. Furthermore, doctor’s waiting rooms are full of other sick people. This is the worst place to be if you are also ill; you can end up making yourself much worse.
What are the limitations of this AI?
Currently, this AI software is typically owned by one company and only capable of diagnosing one specific illness. If you had no idea what was wrong with you, these AI chatbots would probably not be able to help you all that much. But, if you had a hunch that you had, say, the flu; it would be able to cross-reference all of your symptoms against the flu and see if you are a match. You can already do this yourself on websites such as WebMD, but this way, you could get a prescription for the correct medication too. So, will artificial intelligence enhance diagnosis?

Over time it almost certainly will. The limitations currently mean that it can only do one specific job well; having a different app for each illness known to man would not be feasible at all. Over time, the AI will become more advanced and be able to make more acute diagnosis. This is still a long way off, but the progress that has been made in recent years is very encouraging.
