Visitors, especially first-timers, to Los Cabos who arrive and choose to stay in the confines of their mega-resorts often do not get a lot of information on the many things to do beyond the resort property. Cabo San Lucas, the much busier and more nightlife centered city at the tip of the Baja, is well known for its bars and nightclubs, but after a few days on the beach and a few nights in clubs, you may be looking for something different. That is when a trip to San Jose del Cabo becomes an excellent option especially for families traveling with children.
San Jose del Cabo is much more quaint and quiet than it’s big bustling sister Cabo San Lucas. While it still offers plenty of beaches, golf courses, and restaurants, the town is just a little quieter and more serene than Cabo. Here you can find the original mission that was built when the city originated. Also, behind San Jose del Cabo’s church and historic town center is the ever-growing Gallery District. According to many locals and tourists, this area in recent years has started to become the cultural center of the Los Cabos area.
On Thursday evenings beginning November 1st, the town of San Jose del Cabo hosts an Art walk for locals and tourists to enjoy the area. They close down a few streets to cars, and people fill the streets walking with their friends and families while music, chatter, and laughter fill the air. Local artists and gallery owners open their shops and display their pieces on the sidewalks while interacting with the walkers on tour. Visitors can view their many pieces of artwork and speak with the artists. The whole idea of this weekly event is to have the artists and the townspeople interact with the visitors to their town. They invite you to come, drink, eat, laugh and learn about their culture and traditions.
San Jose del Cabo is a special place to walk around and enjoy the many shops and restaurants on a regular evening, but it is especially fun on a Thursday night Art Walks. The vibe of these events is very casual, and it is a great way to get out and mix with the locals and possibly find that one of a kind souvenir your friends will love. Worst case scenario, you walk around a quaint Mexican town, learn a little history and possibly find one of their fabulous restaurants you may not otherwise have come across.
