Los Posadas marks the beginning of Christmas festivities in Cabo San Lucas, and GlobeQuest Travel Club shares how tourists can enjoy this tradition.
Thanks to GlobeQuest Travel Club, tourists looking for a vacation with that extra something can find it in Cabo San Lucas during the holiday festivities called Los Posadas. This authority in global vacation lodging recognizes why this Mexican tradition is a must-see cultural experience and invites visitors to join in on the fun.
Vacationing in Cabo San Lucas during December gives visitors a special glimpse intoMexico’s spiritual side. GlobeQuest Travel Club recommends taking an evening to join in this holiday tradition that can be traced back some 400 years. The arduous journey of Mary and Joseph traveling from Nazareth to Bethlehem are re-enacted through Los Posadas each Christmas season. Posadas is the Spanish word for “lodging,” which illustrates that these ceremonies commemorate the struggle this biblical couple encountered seeking shelter so long ago.
The processions are usually illuminated by candlelight, and may involve many townspeople called los peregrines. An angel leads the way to local homes as participants carrying statues of Mary and Joseph follow. Children may be dressed as nativity members and a donkey may carry a girl dressed as Mary. Songs are sung before a door is finally opened. Cookies, tamales and a hot holiday drink called ponche may be served, according to GlobeQuest Travel Club. A piñata, usually shaped like a Christmas star, and nativity scene complete the event.
Los Posadas are customarily held the nine days before Christmas. Every evening the festivities take place in Cabo San Lucas from December 16 through the 24. According to tradition, these nine days called “novenario,” in Spanish, represent each of the nine months that Jesus grew in Mary’s womb. GlobeQuest Travel Club suggests heading over to a procession well before sunset to be sure to see everything from a good vantage point.
Cabo San Lucas can be the ideal vacation spot any time of year, but guests get the opportunity to see something unique around Christmas. Be a part of a holiday tradition that not everyone is fortunate enough to experience when visiting Mexico this December. GlobeQuest Travel Club illustrates why Los Posadas is significant and exactly what makes it so special.
