Holidays Lounge is inviting members to add the Florida city of St. Petersburg to their 2017 vacation lists.
This Florida city gets very little attention compared to its cousins at the southern tip of the state, Miami or Central Florida’s Orlando Disneyworld vacations. Members will have plenty to explore in St. Pete, as it is affectionately called.
Holidays Lounge recommends members check out the 100-yr-old botanical oasis called Sunken Gardens. Tourists and local residents love visiting this wondrous spectacle of over 50,000 exotic and native plants and flowers. This is on the “must-see” list for nature enthusiasts. In addition, bring your camera for the sight of waterfalls, flamingos, and demonstration gardens sprinkled throughout the various paths as you explore the oldest garden in this region.
Members interested in learning about the culture and arts scene inSt. Pete, will find there is much to explore in the area.
Start with strolling through St. Petersburg Museum of History for a glimpse into the heritage and history behind this Florida city. Then there is the Florida Holocaust Museum that captures the horrific memories of human suffering experienced by men, women, and children during the Holocaust. Gaining insight into the African-American community and history can be found at Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum. This is named after the noted author and one of the first scholars of African American history. Overlooking the Bay in Downtown St. Pete is The Dali Museum that features the art collection of Salvador Dali, the Spanish Surrealist painter. This is a huge collection of his watercolor and oil paintings, sculptures, and holograms.
Nothing is more breathtaking then a view of the expansive Sunshine Skyway Bridge sprawling across the entire Tampa Bay.
Many beaches encompass the St. Pete area and Holidays Lounge members will want to gauge their time to visit several of them. One that has been named the number one beach in this country is Ft. DeSoto Beach. It is known for the five connected islands that make up the 900 square foot park comprised of nature trails, an 800-ft boat launch, a paved fitness trail, fishing piers, picnic areas and more. For archaeology buffs, check out Maximo Beach & Park that has a 70-acre archaeological site. A 10-foot observation tower provides massive views of the Skyway Bridge, Boca Ciega Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico. Then there is the Frisbee fans dream area called the “Tocobaga Disc Golf Course” made of 18 holes and 47 acres dedicated to throwing Frisbees as far as you can in a competitive environment.
For members who love to hit the links, St. Pete has some excellent golf courses to try out.
Mangrove Bay is a 180-acre championship golf course with 18 holes; PGA approved golf instruction, a driving range, practice facility, clubhouse with snack bar, and pro shop to buy necessities for your golf game.
