Today, Dr. Pankaj Naram would like to share some information about a recent study called Depression, Daily Stressors, and Inflammatory Responses to High-Fat Meals: When Stress Overrides Healthier Food Choices. This study was conducted with 58 healthy women. The women who participated in the study were given one of two kinds of meals, which were either high in oleic sunflower oil, or high in saturated fats. The researchers also took into account the number of daily stressors that these women dealt with day to day. After the participants ate, the research team them measured four markers in the participants, these included C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and vascular call adhesion molecule-1. The goal was to see how diet and stress each affected inflammatory markers in the subjects.
What the researchers discovered through their study was that between the women who experienced no stress, subjects who were given the meal that was made with oleic sunflower oil showered lower levels of the four markers than the women who ate the diet rich in high saturated fats. However, what the doctors also found was that in the women who did describe dealing with stressors in their previous day, the benefits of diet were no longer present. In the women who had the sunflower oil diet but then experienced stress, it was stress that heightened the levels of these four markers and causing inflammation rather than the food that they were eating. The presence of the stressors voided the result of the dietary improvements.
